Moving home is stressful, but not all the work has to be done by you. Professionals can help you with heavy lifting and packing, making the process easier. But what about all those items that are too delicate to be packed? What about when you need to store your belongings during a renovation?
You may consider using storage solutions for some items before moving home. When planning a move, it’s essential to know what items are better off in storage when moving home.
Our AVM Storage and Shipping team here has been providing storage solutions to clients who are moving home; if you are looking for a company such as ours, be in touch with our team today. We are always happy to help you in any way we can.
Furniture
Leaving some furniture pieces behind makes sense if you’re moving into a smaller place or just need to free up some storage space for other things. This includes large pieces like sofas, dressers and dining room tables and smaller ones like bookshelves and TV stands.
Just be sure to keep everything you need right away (such as beds) with you during the move so that you’re not left without anywhere to sleep after the movers leave!
Artwork/Other Large Items
If you’ve got an expensive piece of artwork or anything else that is irreplaceable or of sentimental value, then it’s probably best not to bring it along for the ride.
It’s much safer for the items if they are left behind in storage until after unpacking.
Fragile items
Fragile items like glassware, china, and ceramics should also be stored in a climate-controlled environment while you move home. These items will likely break during transit if they’re not adequately packed.
And sometimes, even if they arrive intact at their destination, they may still break when unpacked because they were subject to extreme temperature changes during transportation.
Photographs and other personal documents
Photos and essential documents are best kept at home, so they’re always close. However, if you’re moving abroad, it’s worth considering putting them into storage for safekeeping until you move back.
Books & Dvd”s
Books take up a lot of space, and there’s no point taking them out unless necessary. If they’re in storage, make sure they’re packed correctly, so they don’t get damaged in transit or unpacking at your new address. The same goes for DVDs and CDs: they’re heavy, fragile, and most likely not worth the effort involved in transporting them.
Large Appliances
Large appliances like washing machines and refrigerators can be difficult to transport because they take up so much space in a truck and are heavy too.
It’s best to leave them at your old house until you have a place for them at your new house or apartment. You might also want to consider selling them instead of storing them because they may not fit well into your new home.
Clothes
You never will if you haven’t worn something in a year or more. And if you have, it’s probably not worth taking up room in your new place. Keep only the clothes in your wardrobe that you absolutely love and that fit well.
Anything else can go straight in storage until you need it again – or if you want to sell it for extra money!
Your car
If you own a car, it may seem like a good idea to bring it with you when moving house. However, most cars should be left in storage when relocating.
Car insurance policies often cover vehicles for up to three months while they are off the road – so if you plan on storing your car for this length of time, it may be cheaper than hiring insurance for it whilst travelling.
Kitchen Appliances
If you’re moving into a new place with an empty kitchen, it makes sense to wait to buy new appliances until after the move. Once everything is set up, it’s easier to ensure they fit your new kitchen design. If they don’t work out, you can return them or resell them at little cost.
Electronics
Electronically-powered devices such as computers, laptops and televisions should be kept in storage during your move. These items are fragile and easily damaged if moved around too much or dropped accidentally by a removalist during transit.
Moving home is undoubtedly a stressful experience, no matter where you’re planning on moving or how well prepared you are. But there are ways to ease the stress of moving home if nothing else.
For instance, if your existing home is particularly cluttered and in disarray, for instance, then it’s wise to get that under control before your move. Addressing clutter and maintaining a clean, organised house can go a long way towards making your move more manageable.
